Second opinion

If another doctor has suggested a BPH treatment and you would like a review before making a decision, you are welcome to ask Dr Kooner's rooms to look at your flow results, ultrasound and letters. A formal GP or specialist referral is usually required for a new Medicare-supported consultation.

When a second opinion is worth asking for

  • You have been told your prostate is "too big" for HoLEP, GreenLight or TURP.
  • You have been told HoLEP is not possible while you are on blood thinners.
  • You are weighing up HoLEP against UroLift, Rezum, iTind or ongoing medication.
  • You have had previous prostate surgery and symptoms have returned.
  • You have been in catheter-dependent urinary retention and want to explore options.

What to send before the appointment

  • Referral letter addressed to Dr Kooner.
  • Recent flow study (uroflowmetry) report and post-void residual measurement.
  • Prostate ultrasound or MRI report and images (CD, electronic link or report numbers).
  • Recent PSA and urine culture results if available.
  • List of current medications, including aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants.
  • A short summary of BPH medications tried so far (e.g. tamsulosin, finasteride, combination therapy).

How to contact the rooms

Phone 02 8382 6980 during business hours, or email Raji.Kooner@svha.org.au with the subject line "Laser prostate second opinion".

What to expect in the consultation

  • A review of your symptoms, flow and imaging.
  • A discussion of all reasonable options for your prostate size, bladder function and comorbidities - not only laser.
  • A realistic summary of what each option is likely to achieve and what it does not do.
  • Time to ask questions before committing to a plan.
Email is not for emergencies. If you have fever with obstructed urination, inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding or severe pain, call 000 or attend an emergency department.

Considering laser surgery for an enlarged prostate?

You can ask for a second opinion on your symptoms, flow studies and prostate size before deciding between medication, HoLEP, GreenLight, TURP, UroLift, Rezum or iTind.
